Artificial intelligence for energy technologies and applications in production

About the project

The aim of the KI4ETA research project is to make a disruptive contribution on the way to CO2-free industrial production. To achieve this, the energy efficiency gap in industry, which describes the difference between technical and realizable potential, must be closed. In the KI4ETA project, an integrated, platform-based approach based on artificial intelligence (AI, in German KI) is being pursued for this purpose. The result is a fully digitally networked, energy-efficient and -flexible factory (ETA) with equipment being connected to and controlled by an AI-driven energy management platform. In this way, KI4ETA closes the control loop of the digital factory, from data acquisition from greenfield and brownfield to the intelligent, energy-efficient and -flexible control of plants.

In the process industry, systems are often planned and operated on empirical findings. This leads to inefficient systems often resulting from over- or undersizing or from the use of incorrect or poorly optimized components based on human decision-making. Hence, a vast potential of overcapacities in the energy sector exists and massive amounts of energy-saving measures can be performed without building new infrastructure but just by optimizing existing factories.

GreenDelta in the project

In this project, GreenDelta focuses on conducting research and analysis to optimize the operation and design of industrial heat networks using our own developed open-source software Sophena ( which has been developed in collaboration with C.A.R.M.E.N e.V.. Here, we developed of an extension module integrating industrial heat networks in the Sophena software. This includes the development of a data-based approach to predict the heat demand of connected consumers and producers optimizing processes and increasing resource efficiency.
